STIR/SHAKEN: Ensuring Call Authenticity

The implementation of the STIR/SHAKEN protocol is a direct response to concerns regarding the authenticity of telephone calls and the increasing incidence of fraud and illegitimate calls.

STIR (Secure Telephony Identity Revisited), the first component of the protocol, is a mechanism developed to identify the caller at various stages of telephone communication, ensuring the authenticity of the caller’s identity and preventing fraud, even in call transfer situations.

The SHAKEN protocol (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) performs a similar function, but adapted for calls that use traditional telephone infrastructure, identifying the caller through security tokens.

These technologies were developed with the main purpose of protecting users against illegal calls, especially those made via VoIP, and to provide a safer and more reliable communication experience.

By implementing the STIR/SHAKEN protocol, telephone operators are demonstrating their commitment to combating fraud and ensuring the integrity of the telephone communication system.

Khomp is fully prepared for the revolution, offering integrated solutions to telephone operators. Our systems are already duly aligned with the STIR/SHAKEN protocol, demonstrating our commitment to the technological forefront in this specific field.

In a conversation with Orlando Guitián, CEO of the American operator Smart Carrier, our Commercial Director of International Communications Ygor Voltolini asked about “how the magic works”, that is, how this relationship between STIR/SHAKEN, the operator and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), ANATEL in the United States, works.

Orlando explains that the FCC (or ANATEL here in Brazil) only acts as a regulator, leaving the rules defined but up to third parties to organize the certificates and make the STIR/SHAKEN ecosystem work.

In free translation, Orlando says:

The premise of STIR/SHAKEN is to ensure that the caller ID is correct and that the number called really belongs to the company that is contacting it, and that it is not a fraud or attempted fraud. We know our customers’ numbers, and when we receive the request to create the STIR/SHAKEN Token, we look at the caller’s number, the recipient’s number, and based on that the Token is created.

There is a lot going on behind this, we look at all the information to confirm that there is nothing wrong with this request, and according to this information, the Token created has different levels of trust
