Solution was based on the Kmedia media gateway
Unifique is a company that has been operating in the telecommunications sector, offering services and solutions for homes, condominiums, companies and government agencies for 19 years. Today, it has wireless projects and modern fiber optic networks throughout the state of Santa Catarina, providing voice and data services to more than 90 cities, with the potential to serve more than 70% of the state’s population. Its portfolio currently consists of more than 75 thousand customers.
In order to expand the services offered, it began its STFC (Switched Fixed Telephony Service) operation in 2012. The first phase was planned to interconnect seven cities with the largest coverage of the Unifique Network, with signaling and traffic exchange in each of them.
During implementation, the project was modified to adapt to the structure offered by interconnection operators, with its signaling points now being in only two cities, one redundant of the other. In this new scenario, the cities that had signaling points began to transfer them to the other cities through the SIGTRAN protocol. The support for interconnection protocols implemented in Kmedia media gateways, combined with configuration flexibility, were decisive in making this project change in a timely manner, without the need to replace or acquire new equipment.
With the increase in demand for services, the project soon evolved into a second phase. The scenario was expanded and two other gateways began to perform exclusively the Signaling Transfer Point (PTS) function. In this way, in addition to increasing the number of cities served, the reliability of the network was increased, achieving complete signaling redundancy.
With the network already in production, Khomp met Unifique’s need to provide E1 digital telephony to its DDR (Direct Dialing to Extensions) service customers, through gateways. KMG 200 and UMG 100. The equipment is installed on the customers’ premises, connecting their traditional PABX equipment to the IP telephony of the Unifique network. After the renovation and expansion of the call center and the IP PBX of Unifique itself, Khomp also supplied the IPS 200, IPS 212 and IPS 40 CC telephones.
In a third phase, the Unifique Network implemented a cluster of Kmedia media gateways. Seven Kmedia 800 media gateways from the initial phase were centralized in Blumenau, thus facilitating the management of the equipment, capable of handling 1,536 simultaneous calls.
This structure was possible due to Kmedia technology, which allows centralized management in an external processing element. If there is any communication problem in one of them, the others take over the entire operation, thus ensuring the stability and security of communication in its voice network. The architecture and compatibility of hardware and software versions of this line allowed the first Kmedia, acquired in 2012, to receive the latest software versions released in 2016, allowing them to be used in a new network architecture without losing the investment made at the beginning of the project.
Given the flexibility, better cost-benefit ratio, centralization and redundancy of Khomp’s equipment, Unifique was able to expand its carriers, activate new interconnections and make adjustments to its network equipment in an effective manner, thus renewing its technological park, which has 13 gateways. With the increase in operations, Unifique is adjusting its structure to implement two more clusters of Kmedia gateways, thus creating three large interconnection points.
Unifique and Khomp are currently discussing innovative projects and solutions, as described by Allan Diego Piske, Network Manager for Unifique’s Telephony Sector: “We are constantly expanding our network, which requires adjustments to the platforms and the installed park. The project with Khomp has never been static, it is always changing and Khomp’s flexibility in meeting our needs is very important.”
